Sex Pistols - Extract from their last UK punk-era concert, 25 Dec. 1977 (@256)

This upload offers an extract from Sex Pistols' last UK concert (not counting of course the lousy reunions) that took place at Ivanhoes, in Huddersfield, on Christmas eve, exactly 30 years ago. The gig was not open to the public; it was given for the benefit of the families (and anyone who claimed that was member of the family) of striking firemen. Lydon in "The Filth And The Fury" recalls that "it was like our Christmas party". Memories of attendees can be found here and here.

Joe Strummer interview to Andy Kershaw, Radio1, Manchester, October 1999

Today I feel obliged to pay homage to Joe Strummer who, although he has left us 5 years ago, his mentality, morality and talent remain a shining light. This latest upload is an Andy Kershaw's broadcast in Radio 1, Manchester, in October 1999 (just before the release of Rock Art and the X-Ray Style), where Joe participated as guest dj and of course was interviewed by Kershaw. Here, you will find out, how Strummer discovered reggae, his occupation before his music career, why he didn't want a Clash reunion, what he did during his years of silence, how the Clash wrote White Man In Hammersmith Palais etc. Moreover, the broadcast is full of reggae and world music gems (chosen by both Kershaw and Strummer) from the Tennors, Rokia Traore (session recordings especially for this broadcast), Wendo Kolosoy, Los Super Seven, Andres Landero y su Conjunto, Tommy Collins (the essential drop of country with Tilt Me A Little Toward Tilly) Ihashi Elimhlophe, Toots & the Maytals, El Gran Silencio, Rasha and Prince Buster. All selections highlight the heavy influence that reggae and world music had on Strummer compositions. Of course, songs by Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, Clash and the Pogues couldn't be absent.

Baka Beyond - Spirit Of The Forest (1994) (@256)

Well, I can't think of a most suitable album to dedicate to all those guys that took part in the talks that took place in Bali, Indonesia about climate change. As always, the US and China, the two largest CO2 emitters, didn't bind themselves on doing any significant improvement on their current situation. It is indeed a matter of will of some governors to make things better; the new labour government of Australia who agreed to ratify the Kyoto protocol, (isolating the US as the only developed nation outside the pact) proves such. On the other hand I feel ashamed for our Greek government, who's environmental minister was absent, and his deputy showed up only during the last few days of the conference while Greece is already off-target to meet its Kyoto commitments by 2012, as well as its European Union clean energy commitments in 2010 and 2020. It is also one of the worst EU offenders in terms of climate protection performance.

Various - One More For The Road + other drinking songs (@256)

Latest issue of Mojo has a premium cd dedicated to songs related to cigarettes and alcohol, obviously inspired by the same-titled song of Oasis, the singer of whose is posing on the magazine's front cover. Well here is a similar idea from a Greek music magazine named "Zoo" which during its circulation period had many similarities to Mojo. In addition, following the "bonus material" trend, I added some more drinking songs in order to fill the second part's 100 Mb available.

Stax - a compilation (@256)

With the usual two month lag, this is a compilation celebrating the 50th anniversary of Stax, a record company that for almost fifteen years was totally interwoven with the cultural identity of the black community; the other leg of Stax's importance being of course its colossal contribution in what we call soul music.

In particular, during the 60's, Stax created the so-called "Memphis Soul", which was a rough and edgy version of soul, both in sound and lyrics, and totally different from the slightly manufactured sound of Motown which presented the pop side of the 60's soul. On the turn of the 60's the Stax sound evolved in more complicated compositions and orchestrations (with the most distinctive example being the lp "Hot Buttered Soul" by Isaac Hayes) as well as in more melodic tunes (following the 70's Philly sound) but also in a Black-Power call up.

Να ξαναγραφτεί πάραυτα η παραχαραγμένη ιστορία του τόπου μας! Σήμερα το πρωί, γύρω στις 9.30, στον Alpha, έπαιρναν συνέντευξη από τον αγωνιστή, τον υπέρμαχο των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων, τον τιμητή της δημοκρατίας, το Στυλιανό Παττακό, ο οποίος αποκάλυψε ότι "στη δικτατορία δεν έπεσε ούτε χαστούκι". Πέραν της πλάκας τώρα. Οκ, συμφωνώ με το ότι στη δημοκρατία όλοι πρέπει να έχουν βήμα και ο καθένας να μπορεί να εκθέτει ελεύθερα ότι πιστεύει. Them - Angry Young Them (UK issue) (1965) (@256)

It is very nice to see Van Morrison in the UK top 10 of albums. His latest compilation ("Still On Top") is packed with amazing songs. After all, there aren't many artists that have not released a single flop album throughout a 4-decade career.

This upload is Them's debut lp with a youngster Van Morrison posing in the front cover as the band leader.

Electrelane - promo cd (@256)

We read from Electrelane.com:
"We have decided that the upcoming gigs will be our last for the foreseeable future. After ten years of much fun and hard work, we have realised that we all need a break and time to do other things. This was a tough decision for us to make, but ultimately a positive one. A big thank you to everyone who has come to our shows, put on our shows and bought our records over the years. It means a lot to us. We're really grateful to have had the opportunity to play gigs all over the world and to meet so many lovely people. This last year has been especially enjoyable and we feel happy about moving on with all these good memories to look back on. At the moment we haven't made any band plans for the future, but we're going to have a break and see what happens."

This is indeed very sad news for me since I was a big fan of their very distinctive sound combining unearthly soundscapes with a swirling farfisa. I was lucky enough though to see them live several times since Athens was one of the band's favourite tour stops. The uploaded cd was given free with the concert tickets from their visit in 2002. Farewell...

Dead Can Dance - Garden Of The Arcane Delights (1984) (@256)

Since I've dealt with Dead Can Dance, here is their sole ep release. The cover art is a sketch done by Brendan Perry and represents the themes of the song "The Arcane". As Perry explains:
…The naked blindfolded figure, representing primal man deprived of perception, stands, within the confines of a garden (the world) containing a fountain and trees laden with fruit. His right arm stretches out - the grasping for knowledge - towards a fruit bearing tree, its trunk encircled by a snake. In the garden wall - the wall between freedom and confinement - are two gateways: the dualistic notion of choice. It is a Blakean universe in which mankind can only redeem itself, can only rid itself of blindness, through the correct interpretation of signs and events that permeate the fabric of nature's laws.

Mooney Suzuki - Electric Sweat (2002) (@256)

This is a group that took its name from the two vocalists of Can (Malcolm Mooney, Damo Suzuki). Their sound though, has nothing to do with Can's sound. In this album (where, the front cover pays homage to Grand Funk Railroad's s/t album) Mooney Suzuki play a fast, sweaty and angry three-chord garage punk that had enthused critics and music fans. The selection of the Matrix as production team for their subsequent album though, proved to be a disastrous choice.

Here is a review by Nick Southgate from Wire magazine:
"Bob Dylan is not the only artist on a neverending tour: Damo Suzuki picks up a different outfit at every stop, and in March 2004 at London's Bull & Gate, he hooked up with Now, who had already been forging their own melange of Krautrock, synth pop and lo-fi for a few years. The result is an explosive set that holds well against anything Suzuki recorded in or outside of Can.
The album creeps into life as Damo's guttural whispers and stutters get "Knopp Off" into gear. The group knock themselves into shape one rimshot and wah-snag at a time until the piece rolls itself into a shuddering, funky whole. "Metro Girl" has a tinny hi-hat tempo, swaying with low-slung bass and mangled disco-zaps from the keyboard. "One And One Equal One" is another honourable entry in 'the short history of poor mathematics in rock' and is also a hypnotic slice of motorik fuzz to boot. Its followed up by the one downbeat moment on the album, "Acid Test", a slow paced fragmentary lament. The closing workout is the magnificent "The Zero Game", an ARP synth-loop fued bounce boogie with a two-note guitar part that Michael Karoli would have been proud of. In the latter stages it features that rarest and most precious of things - some psych trumpet playing that adds a glorious spray of Technicolor energy not heard since The Beatles' far-out excursion "Its All Too Much".

Damo Suzuki with Savina Yannatou and Stationary Machinery @ Kitaro Club, Athens, November, 3, 2007

For years now, Damo Suzuki (Can's vocalist during their most fruitful period with four classic Kraut-rock albums) has been engaged on a non-stop, never-ending world tour, going from city to city, his "network" of musicians often involving guest locals, sitting in for one unforgettable night only. In his stop to Athens his network comprised of Savina Yannatou, a singer with tremendous vocal abilities, a world music star (currently in the famous world music record company ECM) mostly known for her interpretation of traditional material from Greece, Corsica, Italy, Sicily, Galicia, Palestine, Albania, Israel, Bulgaria, Armenia, Turkey, Moldavia etc. Unfortunately I did not know the group Stationary Machinery that is also part of the Athens network but I read that they are a post-industrial project with members Dimitris Kamarotos (wind-controlled electronics) and Tilemachos Mousas (Brazilian merimbau, electric guitar and theremin). What should someone expect from such blend? Well...

Be warned! You are entering in very dangerous sonic territories. What I saw and recorded yesterday, was a performance of utter improvisation. Both Suzuki and Yannatou offered 90 minutes of unintelligible vocal acrobatics, backed by two musicians in the first part and four in the second that were setting the "framework" for this extreme concert of sonic terrorism. Although Suzuki was definitely the driving force here, it was Yannatou that proved, under the most difficult conditions, that her unique voice has such vast range that reminds sometimes Diamanda Galas, sometimes Elizabeth Fraser and sometimes Maddy Prior.

It is up to you to decide whether this performance is the result of a musical genius, or of an artist that under his despair for his loss of inspiration has been led in a wanking production of uncomfortable noise. I know what I believe, I'm waiting for your comments.

Judy Garland - Judy At Carnegie Hall (1961) (@256)

I read that Rufus Wainwright will release a cd and a dvd in December featuring the critically acclaimed Judy Garland shows that he gave last year. For those who don't know, Rufus gave some tribute concerts to Judy Garland's live album "Judy At Carnegie Hall" (circa 1961), where he interpreted it in its exact track order. The forthcoming cd and dvd will be from his concerts at Carnegie Hall N.Y. and London Palladium respectively.

See him performing "San Francisco" in London


Someone needs guts and a great talent to perform live these songs and this video Rufus proves that he has both. Here is a very nice pre-show article by the New York Times and here is the N.Y. concert's review from Mojo

The Rufus releases were a unique opportunity to upload the original album, which is in my personal top10 of live albums.

Various - Boys Will Be Girls - The Roots Of Britpop (@256)

It was 10 years ago, by the end of summer, when Oasis released their album "Be Here Now". The numerous fans were expecting the third masterpiece in a row... but they were disappointed (at least most of them). It wasn't that it was a bad album, it was simply much different to what Oasis had released since; heavier and slower, without obvious singles. Some months later, it was proved that this album finally had put the tombstone in the whole britpop era, which undoubtedly gave us some unforgettable albums and songs.
This latest upload offers a premium cd offered by the German issue of Rolling Stone which explores the sound that influenced many of the artists of the britpop boom.

FREEDOM TO BURMA

Once more the protesters in Rangoon prove that the people finally do find the strength to face any armed military forces and fight against any oppressive corrupted dictatorship, whatever the result. By the way, won't the Bush administration help now the citizens of Burma to get rid of the nasty dictators?

Ραδιόφωνο και πάλι

Μάγκες εδώ σας έχω! Κάνοντας ραδιοφωνικό ζάπινγκ χτες στο αμάξι, έπεσα στον 105,5 ("Στο Κόκκινο") κατά τις πέντε και κάτι. Ωραίο το τραγουδάκι, λέω κάτσε να δούμε τι είναι. Και ακούω τη φωνή του Δασκαλόπουλου! Α ρε Χρήστο μας έλειψες. Καλό το ιντερνετικό ραδιόφωνο ως εναλλακτικό μέσο (vinylmicrostore) αλλά το "πραγματικό" έχει άλλη γλύκα. Επιτέλους τα απογεύματα του Σαββατοκύριακού μου αποκτούν νόημα. Σήμερα (πάλι στο αμάξι ήμουν) έπαιξε (μεταξύ άλλων) Battles, Sons and Daughters, Archie Bronson Outfit, Horrors... Τα μπάσα στο τέρμα, τα ηχεία στα όριά τους. Και μετά με μπρίζωσε με Forest, Sandy Denny, Shirley Collins. Αυτό είναι... Σε όλους τους τυχάρπαστους Rawk FM, Captain Jerk, Pink FM με το φρικαλέο playlist σας που αρέσκεστε να ονομάζετε rock, ακούστε εδώ μπας και μάθετε δυο-τρία πράγματα. Και κάτι άλλο. Έχετε καταλάβει ποιους έχει πλέον ο 105,5; Δασκαλόπουλο, Μήνα, Φράγκο, Τζανακάκη, Τσάβαλο, Τριανταφυλλίδη. Μετά από κάποια χρόνια που στο ραδιόφωνο τακτικά άκουγα μόνο Πετρίδη, μου φαίνεται ότι επιτέλους η βελόνα μου θα ξανακολλήσει σε κάποιο σταθμό. Ίσως είναι ιεροσυλία, ίσως ο ενθουσιασμός μου αλλά όλα αυτά δεν σας φαίνεται ότι έχουν μία μυρωδιά Ρόδον FM;

My son for president

Μετά τις τελευταίες εξελίξεις στο ΠΑΣΟΚ (υποψηφιότητα Τζιώτη) σκεφτόμουν να βάλω κι εγώ υποψηφιότητα για πρόεδρος. Βάζοντάς τα όμως κάτω κατάλαβα ότι δεν θα προλαβαίνω να πολυασχολούμαι. Λίγο η δουλειά, λίγο η οικογένεια, το blog, μουσική, σινεμά, δεν θα μου μένει χρόνος για το κίνημα. Αποφάσισα λοιπόν να πάω στην Χ. Τρικούπη και να προτείνω τον 9μηνο υιό μου για πρόεδρο. Τι στο καλό... Από τον (συνονόματό του) Γιωργάκη μάλλον καλύτερα θα τα πάει, άσε που μιλάει και καλύτερα.

V.A. - Anthology Of American Folk Music Edited by Harry Smith (@256) (a selection of tracks)

During the 13th Athens International Film Festival that ends today, Athenians had the opportunity to watch "Control", "The Future Is Unwritten" and "Coffy". For all three movies, you can find respective posts in this blog (here, here and here).
Another very interesting movie that was screened (in a half empty theatre sadly) in the Festival, for which I feel obliged to have an upload was "The Old, Weird America: Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music". The compilation to which the documentary refers is simply a cornerstone release with a definite influence in country, folk, blues, rock'n'roll since. Countless artists have drawn inspiration from this collection of songs; Seeger, Dylan, Baez, Fahey, Garcia, Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul & Mary are some of those. To make it even clearer to the rock orientated music fans, this compilation is as fundamental as Lenny Kaye's Nuggets is to rock music.
As for Harry Smith who compiled it and the movie itself, we read Nathan Southern's article from allmovie:
"The American folk music revival of the 1950s and '60s is a well-known and laboriously discussed historical phenomenon, yet few realize that one man virtually prompted that genre explosion all by himself. Throughout the 1930s and '40s, music aficionado Harry Smith collected untold numbers of folk recordings on 78s, and assembled one of the most massive private libraries of its kind in recent history. In fact, Smith's reputation as a collector spread across the country and reached the preservationists at the Folkways label, who convinced Smith to let them compile and mass-issue a best-of compilation from his library. (...)In the film The Old Weird America: Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music, documentarist Rani Singh — who worked as Smith's personal assistant, from 1989 until his death in 1991 — chronicles the pioneer, his life story, and his little-known accomplishments. The film also features extracts from a concert in which contemporary artists including Nick Cave, Elvis Costello, and Beth Orton interpret old folk ballads from Smith's collection. Hal Wilner (Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man) staged the performance segments."
I deliberately didn't upload the whole thing in order to urge you to get it and discover the power of each track through the brilliant booklets with lyrics, info, drawings, references etc. The songs contained in the following two uploads were equally chosen from the three categories to which this compilation is divided; Ballads (cds A&B), Social Music (cds C&D) and Songs (cds E&F), while the number before the artist and title of each track follows the numbering of the compilation.

The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem - The Rising Of The Moon: Irish Songs Of Rebellion (1959) (@256)

It was just yesterday that I read that Tommy Makem, "the Godfather of Irish Music" passed away on August 1st, 2007. It is sad that one of the leading figures of 60's folk revival died almost forgotten. Nevertheless, I always hope for reissues that will lead younger audiences to his exceptional baritone voice.

This upload, the first of the numerous recordings from his collaboration with the Clancy Brothers, contains traditional material (most of the songs were written in the late 18th century) performed and arranged in a baring way that will make your hair rise, not to mention the lyrics with their heavy agenda.

P.S. The interpretation of Tommy Makem on "The Wind That Shakes The Barley" has haunted me from the very first day I heard it, and I still consider it as one of the best songs I have ever heard. RIP

People of a lesser God

The Greek government correctly decided to compensate the people that their houses were burnt during the disastrous fires that destroyed a large part of Peloponnese. I'm wandering why they did not act in the same way with the people that were living in rented houses and were working in the fields. Is it because most of these people are immigrants and the immigrants will not vote in the forthcoming elections? Now, these people are suddenly unemployed since most of the fields in the area have also been burnt, and without any household effects.

Κι όμως. Μία εβδομάδα μετά η φωτιά συνεχίζει να καίει. Έχει όμως υπάρξει μία σημαντική διαφοροποίηση! Οι πολιτικάντηδες σαν να μη συμβαίνει τίποτα έχουν ξεμυτίσει και έχουν πάρει σβάρνα τα κανάλια διαλαλώντας την προεκλογική τους πραμάτεια. Από κοντά και οι δημοσιογράφοι οι οποίοι τους δίνουν βήμα. Οι σχετικές με τις καταστροφές που προκλήθηκαν (και συνεχίζουν να προκαλούνται ακόμα και σήμερα) ερωτήσεις αφορούν στο τι επιπτώσεις θα έχουν αυτές στα ποσοστά των κομμάτων. Σκατά στα μούτρα σας. Έχετε χάσει τελείως το μέτρο. ΔΕΝ ΜΑΣ ΑΠΑΣΧΟΛΕΙ ΤΟ ΘΕΜΑ ΣΑΣ. ΖΕΙΤΕ ΣΕ ΑΛΛΗ ΧΩΡΑ. Σε τούτη που ζω εγώ ο κόσμος είναι σοκαρισμένος με τους ανθρώπους που κάηκαν, με τα "κάηκαν κάτι δέντρα" της Ολυμπίας, με την καταστροφή του περιβάλλοντος και του κοινωνικού ιστού της Πελοποννήσου. Πως να ψηφίσετε στις επόμενες εκλογές

Να ρωτήσω κάτι απλό; Αν υπήρχε ένα κόμμα πράσινων (οικολόγων δηλαδή και όχι "σοσιαλιστών") με δεδομένο το σημερινό χάλι μας (πυρκαγιές, καταπατήσεις, μη-αναδασώσεις, μόλυνση ατμόσφαιρας, γης, υδάτων, έλλειψη χώρων πρασίνου, μεταλλαγμένα, ανυπαρξία ενεργειακής και χωροταξικής πολιτικής) που όλο και περισσότεροι έχουν αρχίσει να συνειδητοποιούν, δεν θα έμπαινε χαλαρά στη βουλή; Μιλάω φυσικά για κόμμα με αξιόλογους εκπροσώπους και όχι για τα διάφορα γραφικά σύνολα της σημερινής ελληνικής πολιτικής πραγματικότητας. Για να το πάω ακόμα παραπέρα, το κόμμα αυτό, αν υπήρχε, θα έπρεπε να είχε στόχο να συγκυβερνήσει με τον εκάστοτε νικητή των εκλογών με επόμενο στόχο (το λιγότερο) ένα Υπουργείο Περιβάλλοντος. Η ιστορία με τους πράσινους και το Γιόσκα Φίσερ στη Γερμανία θα μπορούσε να αποτελέσει μπούσουλα.

Παραθέτω αυτούσιο το άρθρο του Ουμπέρτο Έκο "Πως να ψηφίσετε στις επόμενες εκλογές" από το βιβλίο "Η Σημειολογία στην Καθημερινή Ζωή" (Εκδ. Α. Μαλλιάρης - Παιδεία Α.Ε.). Το άρθρο αυτό πρωτοδημοσιεύτηκε το 1976 στην Corriere Della Sera και είναι ιδιαιτέρως εντυπωσιακό το ότι αν αλλάξει κάποιος τα ιταλικά ονόματα που αναφέρονται, με αντίστοιχα ελληνικά, θα έχει μία ωραιότατη απεικόνιση της σημερινής ελληνικής πολιτικής σκηνής όπου δύο κόμματα μαλώνουν για το ποιο έχει κάνει τις λιγότερες "ατασθαλίες".
"Καθώς δημοσιεύονται σιγά σιγά τα ψηφοδέλτια αρχίζουν και οι αντιδράσεις αγαναχτισμένων δημοσιογράφων και ανήσυχων πολιτών γιατί πολλά πρόσωπα, ύποπτα για παράνομες ενέργειες και ατασθαλίες, βρίσκονται στις πρώτες θέσεις σαν υποψήφιοι που θ' αντιπροσωπεύσουν το λαό στο κοινοβούλιο. Από κάτι τέτοια βγάζει κανείς μαύρα συμπεράσματα για το μέλλον μας.
Εγώ θα ήθελα να ηρεμήσω τα πνεύματα, αποκαλύπτοντας πως, στην Ιταλία, η κατάσταση είναι καλύτερη από παντού αλλού. Κι ας δούμε το γιατί:
Με τέτοιους υποψήφιους γίνονται κατ' αρχή σεβαστά τα δίκαια αιτήματα αντιπροσώπευσης. Τι πρέπει να κάνει ένα κοινοβούλιο; Ν' αντικατοπτρίζει όλες τις τάσεις, τις απόψεις, τις επιθυμίες, τις απαιτήσεις, τις ευχές κάθε μέλους της κοινωνίας. Και μήπως δεν αποτελούν μέρος της κοινωνίας οι κερδοσκόποι, οι διαφθορείς των κρατικών υπηρεσιών, οι ψευδοανατροπείς του πολιτεύματος, οι φίλοι των Ελλήνων συνταγματαρχών, οι ψηφοθήρες, αυτοί που βάζουνε φωτιά στα δάση για να πετύχουν οικοπεδοποίηση, οι παραβάτες των φορολογικών νόμων; θα αντιπροσωπεύονται λοιπόν στο κοινοβούλιο από διεφθαρμένους πρώην υπουργούς, μαφιόζους, αποστάτες στρατηγούς. Θα μπορούσε κάποιος ν' απαντήσει ότι στη βουλή πρέπει να φτάνουνε μόνο οι «νόμιμες» επιδιώξεις με την εκλογή «τίμιων» ανθρώπων. Αλλά αυτό μου φαίνεται καθαρή αφέλεια.
Υπάρχουνε παράνομες πράξεις που τιμωρούνται αυστηρά, όπως ο βιασμός, η ανθρωποκτονία για ληστεία, η οδήγηση σε κατάσταση μέθης με συνέπεια την πρόκληση θανατηφόρου δυστυχήματος, η κλοπή σταφυλιών από αμπέλι. Γι’ αυτές τις παρανομίες όλοι είναι σύμφωνοι. Κι απ’ όσο ξέρω δεν υπάρχουν υποψήφιοι που να σκοτώσανε καμιά γριά με τσεκούρι για να της αφαιρέσουνε τη χρυσή καδένα με το φλουρί, ούτε άνεργοι που κλέψανε πεπόνια και τους τσάκωσε ο αγροφύλακας, ούτε βασανιστές ανήλικων παιδιών ή μπεκρήδες που ενοχλούσανε τον κόσμο με τις αγριοφωνάρες τους. Αλλά υπάρχουν άλλες πράξεις που, αν και κολάσιμες, δεν καταδικάζονται ξεκάθαρα και αμέσως απ' τα δικαστήρια, λες και δεν είναι σαφές αν είναι κακές ή καλές (όπως η καταχρηστική οικοδόμηση ή η ίδρυση «σκοτεινών» εταιρειών). Άλλωστε γι’ αυτό καθυστερεί πάντα η ανακάλυψη των πραγματικών υπευθύνων. Έτσι τα ζητήματα μένουν θολά, δεν ξέρουμε αν αυτές οι πράξεις επιτρέπονται ή απαγορεύονται, κι επομένως είναι σωστό να αντιπροσωπεύονται οι υπαίτιοι, και να υποστηρίζονται ενδεχομένως, από κάποιον του σιναφιού τους.
Έπειτα, τι πάει να πει «τίμιος άνθρωπος»; Κάποιος μπορεί να είναι τίμιος μέχρι τη στιγμή που θ' αναλάβει δημόσιο αξίωμα, αλλά έπειτα να έχει εγκληματικές προθέσεις. Εμείς τον εκλέγουμε πιστεύοντας ότι έχει ακέραιο χαραχτήρα, και μετά από δυο μήνες αυτός σφετερίζεται και καταχράται δημόσιο χρήμα. Δυσάρεστη έκπληξη! Δεν είναι καλύτερα να εκλέξουμε αμέσως κάποιον που θεωρείται κιόλας ύποπτος σφετερισμού και κατάχρησης για να μπορούμε να τον παρακολουθούμε; Απ' αυτή τη σκοπιά το δικό μας σύστημα είναι καλύτερο από τόσα άλλα. Σκεφτείτε τις Ενωμένες Πολιτείες: υποψιάζονται το Νίξον για παράνομες μαγνητοφωνήσεις και αμφιβόλου τιμιότητας δοσοληψίες με τον Bobo Rebozo. Η χώρα τον διώχνει. Και οι αφελέστατοι πουριτανοί δε σκέφτονται ότι ο Rebozo και τόσοι άλλοι όμοιοί του είναι πάλι έτοιμοι να ψάξουν για άλλες συμμαχίες με καινούρια πρόσωπα. Με ποιους άραγε;
Εδώ είναι το ωραίο. Οι Αμερικανοί πολίτες ζούνε με το άγχος γιατί δεν ξέρουνε ποιοι από τους νεοεκλεγέντες θ' αρχίσουνε να ετοιμάζουνε ταινίες και μικρόφωνα, να παραβιάζουνε γραφεία αντιπάλων κομμάτων, να κάνουνε «ψυχιατρικούς» φακέλους για αντίθετους πολιτικούς, να σπαταλάνε δημόσιο χρήμα για προσωπικούς σκοπούς. Κι επομένως θα ' χουνε πάλι ανάλωση ενεργειών και χρήματος από μέρους του τύπου και του δικαστικού σώματος για ν' ανακαλύψουνε τους νέους κατεργάρηδες. Ενώ στην Ιταλία το πρόβλημα έχει λυθεί.
Εμείς δε χρειάζεται να σπαζοκεφαλάμε, μια και οι κύριοι Gioia, Gava, Lima, Tanassi, Miceli και άλλοι έχουν ήδη κάνει στραβοπατήματα, για να βρούμε ποιος τώρα θα τα κάνει στη θέση τους. Πρέπει απλά να παρακολουθούμε προσεχτικά τις κινήσεις τους. Σκεφτείτε τι θα γινότανε αν ένας καινούριος κι άγνωστος υπουργός άμυνας δήλωνε ότι πρέπει ν' αγοράσουμε αεροπλάνα, ας πούμε, Vulcan, της εταιρείας Smith & Smith of Pensacola... Ατέλειωτες αμφιβολίες; κι αν είναι ελαττωματικά και ο υπουργός πάρει μίζα; Αν αντίθετα η πρόταση προέρχεται από ένα σταμπαρισμένο υπουργό, το πρόβλημα είναι πολύ πιο απλό: αγοράζουμε τ' αεροπλάνα που αυτός δεν πρότεινε.
Απ’ την άλλη μεριά είναι ανώφελο να θέλουμε να υποθέσουμε πάση θυσία ότι οι άνθρωποι είναι ριζικά καλοί. Ίσως δεν είναι και ριζικά κακοί, αλλά συχνά είναι χείριστοι. Υπάρχουνε άραγε στην Ιταλία φασίστες που θα θέλανε να συγκεντρώσουν όλους τους συνδικαλιστές σ' ένα γήπεδο και να τους τουφεκίσουν, να σχηματίσουνε μια στρατιωτική κυβέρνηση και να κάψουνε τα εκφυλισμένα βιβλία στις πλατείες των πόλεων; Βέβαια υπάρχουν, είν' ανώφελο να κλείνουμε τα μάτια. Έχουμε ένα στρατηγό με πραξικοπηματικές διαθέσεις, έτοιμο να παραβεί τον όρκο που έδωσε για αφοσίωση στη δημοκρατία; Έχουμε. Ωραία, ας τον βάλουμε λοιπόν στον κατάλογο των υποψηφίων. Πρέπει τέλος πάντων κάποιος στη βουλή ν' αντιπροσωπεύει την Ιταλία του Maramaldo, του στρατηγού Ramorino, του ναύαρχου Persano, των φοβητσιάρηδων στρατηγών που το 'σκασαν στην Πεσκάρα αφήνοντας χωρίς κεφαλή τους φαντάρους μας στο έλεος των γερμανικών τανκς.
Ας σκεφτούμε τα πράγματα με λίγο ρεαλισμό. Δε θα 'ταν καλύτερα να γυρνάνε στους δρόμους οι πορτοφολάδες μ’ ένα διακριτικό σημάδι στο πέτο, όπως άλλωστε και οι απαγωγείς παιδιών και οι επιδειξιομανείς των δημόσιων κήπων; θα ξέραμε, χωρίς δισταγμούς, πότε να προσέχουμε την τσέπη με το πορτοφόλι, να κρατάμε σφιχτά το παιδί στην αγκαλιά, να γυρίζουμε σεμνά το κεφάλι απ' την άλλη μεριά. Το πρόβλημα βρίσκεται μάλλον στ' ότι όλοι αυτοί είναι χωρίς διακριτικά και περνάμε τη μέρα μας στο λεωφορείο, στο δημαρχείο, στον κινηματογράφο κοιτώντας με
δυσπιστία τους διπλανούς μας.
Ένα άλλο πάλι που ακούω είναι κατηγορίες ότι δήθεν πολλά κόμματα λένε τι δεν πρέπει να γίνει αλλά δε λένε τι πρέπει να γίνει. Μ' άλλα λόγια δεν έχουνε πρόγραμμα. Μα τι είναι αυτό το πρόγραμμα; Σκεφτείτε το πρόγραμμα της Σκάλας του Μιλάνου: υπάρχει σ' αυτό ένας κατάλογος ονομάτων και τίτλων. Αν διαβάσουμε «Μποκερίνι, Βιβάλντι, Στράους», ξέρουμε ότι μας περιμένει μια βραδιά γεμάτη αγγελικές μελωδίες. Αν διαβάσουμε «Μπέριο, Μπουλέζ, Μπουσότι», ξέρουμε ότι, πρέπει να ετοιμαστούμε ψυχολογικά για προκλητικούς ήχους, μακριές σιωπές, τσιρίσματα, και τόσο το χειρότερο για τους αδαείς μελομανείς που, άσχετα μ' αυτό, πηγαίνουνε κάθε φορά και μετά παραπονιούνται. Άρα ένας εκλογικός κατάλογος υποψηφίων είναι ένα πρόγραμμα. Αν μας ξαναπροτείνονται γνωστά άτομα για τα οποία έχουμε λόγους να δυσπιστούμε, ξέρουμε ότι το πρόγραμμα είναι να συνεχιστεί η κατάσταση όπως ήτανε πριν, και ίσως χειρότερα, μια και παρόλο ότι αυτά τα πρόσωπα δεν ήταν επιθυμητά από το λαό, αποδείχτηκαν αρκετά ισχυρά ώστε να συνεχίσουν τη σταδιοδρομία τους.
Μ’ αυτή την έννοια υπάρχουν ψηφοδέλτια που εξασφαλίζουνε πιο σοβαρές και συγκεκριμένες εγγυήσεις από άλλα. Για παράδειγμα, λένε για τους κομουνιστές: «Προσέξτε, είναι άτομα που μιλάνε γι' αυτονομία, αλλά έπειτα μπορεί να πουληθούνε στους Ρώσους ή, μόλις ανεβούνε στην εξουσία, να μη θέλουνε πια να φύγουν». Βέβαια, είναι πολύ πιθανό. Αλλά αν τελικά μας απογοητέψουνε; Κι αν δε μας κουβαλήσουν εδώ τεθωρακισμένα απ' τη Μογγολία και δε βάλουνε σφυροδρέπανα στις εκκλησίες; Πώς να τους εμπιστευτεί κανείς; Δεν υπάρχουνε σοβαρές εγγυήσεις. Και τους άλλους, της Προλεταριακής Δημοκρατίας, πώς να τους υποστηρίξεις; Κι αν δεν απαγάγουν τον πρόεδρο της βουλής και δεν τον παραδώσουνε στις Ερυθρές Ταξιαρχίες για να βασανιστεί;
Αντίθετα σε άλλες περιπτώσεις δεν υπάρχει αμφιβολία, υπάρχει πλήρης βεβαιότητα. Τα πρόσωπα του κόμματος έχουν ήδη κάνει και κάνουν αυτά για τα οποία θα μπορούσαμε να τα υποψιαστούμε. Όποιος αγοράζει ξέρει τι κουβαλάει στο σπίτι του και πόσον καιρό θα διαρκέσει (που είναι το όνειρο κάθε καλής νοικοκυράς). Ας ευχαριστήσουμε το Θεό που ζούμε σε μια χώρα όπου όλα γίνονται φανερά, κι ας διαβάσουμε με προσοχή τα ψηφοδέλτια για να ξέρουμε τι μας περιμένει: ίσως να μη μας αρέσει, αλλά τουλάχιστον είμαστε σίγουροι ότι οι προσδοκίες μας δε θα διαψευστούν."

Elvis Presley - The Sun Collection (@256)

On 16/8, it was the 30th an. of Presley's death. This upload is a collection of songs that Elvis had recorded in Sam Phillips' Sun studios, before he moved to RCA were he was established as a mega-star. Apart from his unique vocals and the precise instrument playing by himself and the session musicians Bill Black in bass, Scotty Moore in guitar and (in some of the songs) D. J. Fontana in drums, the impressive with this collection of songs is (in most cases) the total transformation of the original material to a feverish fusion of country and blues, in other words to a rockabilly style that was pure, primitive and spontaneous. These recordings definitely showcased the sound that was about to come.
