Various - Timeless: Hank Williams Tribute (2001) (@320)

The "New Multitudes" lp for which the Mermaid Avenue lp was uploaded in the previous music post has a similar concept to "The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams" lp (which was released on October, last year) i.e. both albums are tributes based on lyrics (written by Guthrie and Williams respectively) to songs that were never recorded, while the participating artists contribute to the composition of each song. Hence, it was a good opportunity to remember and older (and magnificent) Hank Williams tribute album. Bob Dylan is another connecting link between the two Hank Williams tributes since he participates in both of them. Enjoy.

Various - The soundtrack of Tom Stoppard's "Rock 'n' Roll" (@256)

I recently enjoyed Tom Stoppard's Rock 'n' Roll. A play that goes from 1968 and the invasion of the Soviet tanks in Prague, to the fall of the Berlin Wall. The communist utopia for those who lived it from the outside and the harsh face of it for those who lived it from the inside, rock'n'roll as a rebellious declaration against oppressive regimes, as well as a paganist device, and last but not least, the significance of idealism and passion in people's lives, all these are part of this magnificent play.

This upload offers all songs, in the exact order they are heard during the play.

Doug Sahm - Doug Sahm And Band (1973) (@256)

Another flawless production by Jerry Wexler (and Arif Mardin). An irresistible 'session' band which includes Bob Dylan and Dr. John. A superb selection of tracks that flow gently like brook's water. Well, what else can you ask for?

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Déjà Vu (1970) (@256)

Although the attempt to define Fleet Foxes' sound is impossible just by naming one or two older groups with a similar sound, after listening to their s/t debut lp I was spontaneously led to remove the dust from my Deja Vu copy and to spin it on my turntable. That was it! I had forgotten the vibes this album can create. I owe one big 'thank you' to the Fleet Foxes who 'forced' me to remember it and another one for releasing such a masterpiece.

Update: Another two good reasons for uploading this album have emerged. The first one is of course that Deja Vu is among the best lp releases of Atlantic records. The four uploads dedicated to Jerry Wexler that follow this post are all Atlantic's releases. So Deja Vu, although not a Wexler production, could (indirectly) be also part of the posts dedicated to him.
The second one is the release of the movie "CSNY / Déjà Vu" which documents the quartet's 2006 Freedom of Speech tour. The film includes a wealth of information about the Iraq War, and the film's anti-war stance gets as much attention as the group's musical performances.

Various - One More For The Road + other drinking songs (@256)

Latest issue of Mojo has a premium cd dedicated to songs related to cigarettes and alcohol, obviously inspired by the same-titled song of Oasis, the singer of whose is posing on the magazine's front cover. Well here is a similar idea from a Greek music magazine named "Zoo" which during its circulation period had many similarities to Mojo. In addition, following the "bonus material" trend, I added some more drinking songs in order to fill the second part's 100 Mb available.

Various Artists - The Songs Of Bob Dylan (1989) (@256)

Bryan Ferry pays homage to the most important U.S. composer of the 2nd half of the 20th century, by releasing an album with covers on Bob Dylan's songs. It is obvious that Ferry admires Dylan since he has already covered A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall in his first solo lp 'These Foolish Things' (1973), It Ain't Me Babe in 'Another Time, Another Place' lp (1974) and Don't Think Twice It's All Right and It's All Over Now, Baby Blue in 'Frantic' lp (2002). So, our latest upload is also an album with covers on Bob Dylan's songs (one of Ferry's covers is of course here). An all-star team of artists takes part, which includes Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Rod Stewart, Flying Burrito Brothers, Byrds, Them, Stills - Kooper - Bloomfield, Judy Collins, Siouxsie And The Banshees, Tom Robinson Band, Richie Havens, Jimi Hendrix, Tina Turner, George Thorogood, Carl Perkins, The Band, Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton, Joan Baez, Jerry Lee Lewis, Everly Brothers, Ron Wood, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt etc. After all, the variety of styles of the artists that approached Dylan's material is the best evidence of his vast influence on music.
