OST - The Beekeeper (1986) (@320)

This post is a tribute to the Greek movie director Theodoros Angelopoulos who died recently when he was hit by a motorcycle while shooting his new movie. Although his slow and dreamlike filming style has caused endless arguments among movie aficionados, he is considered as one of the most important European directors. He has worked with famous actors such as Marcello Mastroianni, Harvey Keitel, Willem Dafoe, Bruno Ganz and Jeanne Moreau. In 1998, he won the Palme d’Or in Cannes, with his film Eternity and a Day.
The offered upload is the soundtrack of his movie "The Beekeeper", one of the many times he collaborated with the composer Eleni Karaindrou. On the other hand, The Beekeeper is also a very fruitful collaboration between Karaindrou and Jan Garbarek which initiated a mutual respect between the two artists; as a result Karaindrou followed Garbarek and signed in ECM.

Terry Riley - In C (1968) (@320)

I've done worse.... With a 2-month delay (...) here's the post dedicated to the 50 years of minimalism. It was in London's Kings Place on Nov. 24, 25 and 26 that the relevant events took place to honour artists such as John Cage, Philip Glass, Arvo Pärt, Steve Reich, La Monte Young, Howard Skempton, Terry Riley, Eric Satie, Brian Eno and Glenn Branca among others.



Today's upload offers a fundametal work of minimalism. "In C is a semi-aleatoric musical piece composed by Terry Riley in 1964 for any number of people, although he suggests "a group of about 35 is desired if possible but smaller or larger groups will work". It is a response to the abstract academic serialist techniques used by composers in the mid-twentieth century and is often cited as the first minimalist composition." (quote from wiki)

IMPORTANT UPDATE: A bad vinyl rip had been uploaded. Kronos Quartet and Asha Bhosle - You've Stolen My Heart (2005) (@256)

This post comes as a reply to Nicolas, who left a comment on the previous post and filled me with envy for his presence in a concert of the Kronos Quartet with Asha Bhosle. The odd, yet fruitful collaboration between a classical quartet who have given us extremely interesting works in the past and the most famous Indian singer also serves as a top-class tribute to R.D. London Sinfonietta - Warp Works (2006) (@256)

Let's put another one in the series of the Warp tribute. This time, a very interesting project: Between 2003 and 2005, the London Sinfonietta gave a number of performances where they presented their own version on a number of compositions of Warp label artists (Aphex Twin and Squarepusher) and of some of the most important avant-garde artists of the 20th century. Their aim was to explore the connection between these two sides since the former are considered the developers of what the latter had started. Here, since the tribute is for Warp, I've chosen to separate the two sides and to upload only the Warp related part of this release. Even under this case, the classical perspective on top-rated electronic music is definitely intriguing.

Max Richter - Blue Notebooks (2004) (@256)

Waltz With Bashir, (watch the uploaded youtube video in the "Palestinias I" post), is not only a tragically up-to-date movie, but also within the best films of 2008. It is a splendid animation which documents the massacre of the Palestinian refugees in Sabra and Shatila in 1982. The plot is slowly built up through the attempt of director Ari Folman, who was among the Israeli soldiers that witnessed the massacre, to recollect the events of that period.
The soundtrack of the film is equally exceptional. It has been composed by Max Richter who with each new album establishes his position among the pioneer composers of his generation. Richter has "simply" distorted the rules of classical music by fusing modern elements in it, making him a favourite artist for many indie fans.

This new upload, Richter's best album up to now, showcases his characteristic "post-Classical" (as he defines it) style, which combines his classical, electronic and rock influences. It features readings from Franz Kafka's The Blue Octavo Notebooks and Czesław Miłosz's Hymn of the Pearl and Unattainable Earth. Both readings are carried out by the British actress Tilda Swinton.

OST - 2001: A Space Odyssey (@256)

Arthur Clarke left us on 19 March. He will always be remembered for his monumental novel '2001: A Space Odyssey'. The soundtrack of the s/t film which was created concurrently with the novel and directed by Kubrick is uploaded here.

Various Artists - Mob Life-16 Great Tracks From The Films Of Martin Scorsese (2004) (@256)

He finally did it. The Academy gave Scorsese what they should have given him two or three times (for Taxi-Driver, Raging Bull and Good Fellas) already. We are celebrating with him by uploading a fine compilation given as a premium cd with Uncut mag on November 2004, containing tracks from films directed by Scorsese. One should know that he is a great music fan, and the tracks in his movies are selected by himself.
