Isaac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul (1969) (@256)

Isaac Hayes is simply among the major contributors in the development of soul music. C0-composer of colossal songs for Stax, responsible for one of the best blaxploitation soundtracks and for... Hot Buttered Soul, the album that as Jason Birchmeier notes in allmusic "transformed Hayes into a lifelong icon".

P.S. For those interested there is also an older post that compiles some of the songs from the Stax label.

Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley (1958) (@256)

This is the first lp release of the man who not only was a cornerstone of the rock'n'roll era, but also had an absolutely dominant guitar playing style that can still be heard in recent releases. Bo Diddley passed away at the beginning of last June. RIP

Various Artists - Tibetan Freedom Concert (1997) (@256)

This one comes as a gift to the Chinese governors for their fantastic work for the opening day of the Olympics. Unfortunately, it is only to the governors that I can send a message through this blog, since its access is banned for the vast majority of the Chinese citizens.

OST - Batman Original Television Soundtrack (1966) (@256)

There are some light years distance between the current dark version of Batman and the somehow cartoonistic (if not ridiculous in case someone wants to be nastier) tv series of the 60's, with Adam West in the main role. Nevertheless, the television soundtrack offers more-than-decent scoring by Nelson Riddle with adaptations of Neal Hefti's 'Batman Theme'. The extended dialogues of the tv characters which are also included add a camp (but at the same time nostalgic) note to the whole project.

Various - Sub Pop 100 (1986) (@256)

Now, there is not much to add in my posts from early this year where we celebrated 20 years from the first non-compilation Sub Pop release. Here you can find a Sub Pop compilation where the old as well as the new generation of the company's groups are represented, while here is the company's first non-compilation release.
Mojo's latest issue (n. 177), apart of a (superb) Sub pop article, gives as a premium the compilation 'Sub Pop 300', continuing the company's series of Sub Pop 100 and Sub Pop 200.
Sub Pop 100, which is uploaded here was the first vinyl release of Sub Pop, after nine issues as a fanzine, where six of the volumes where magazines and three where cassettes (the fifth, seventh, and ninth issues).
To dig deeper, apart from Mojo, there are also the relevant articles Sub Pop 20 from Seattle Weekly and Sub Pop turns 20 from Guardian.

P.S.1 What is still not clear to me is in what sense July 1988 is Sub Pop's birthday, when their first release had been back in 1986.
P.S.2 Fleet Foxes is the latest treasure of Sub Pop; their s/t album is already a landmark for 2008. A relevant upload is on the way.

Buddy Miles - The Best of Buddy Miles (@256)

Another great loss, criminally neglected by this blog (up to now). Buddy Miles was one of the best drummers of the late 60's-early 70's era. Although he is best known as a member of the Electric Flag, for the collaboration with Carlos Santana and most notably as a member of Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys, the work with his group Buddy Miles Express as well as his solo albums should not be overlooked.
The current upload is a retrospective (with the front and back cover reminiscent of his best solo work "Them Changes" and of "A Message To The People" lp respectively) of all three albums he released with the Buddy Miles Express and of the first three (two studio and one live) albums as solo artist. The music is a mixture of funk, Stax soul and psychedelia, with his awesome drumming in the frontline.

P.S. Along with Klaus Dinger (see the related upload here) we count two seminal drummers that left us this year. An appropriate compilation for the (usually) men (usually) at the second row of the stage is on the way.
