Ike Turner - A selection of songs (@256)

Although his name is synonymous to abusive behaviour and drug abuse, his contribution to soul music should not be overlooked. He left us on Dec., 12, 2007. This upload covers both his 50's period with various sessions he made and songs he penned (among which is the famous "Rocket 88", a r'n'r song in the pre-r'n'r era, which was penned by Ike, despite the official author credit that was given to Jackie Brenston), and the Ike & Tina period. "River Deep Mountain High" cannot be found here since Ike was not around at all by the time this masterpiece was being created.

Stockhausen left us on Dec., 5, 2007. He is responsible for setting the alphabet of electronic music which, without exception, all relevant artists would later use. Not my favourite Sunday morning artist though...

China Olympic games, executions, yahoo case

2008 is the year of the China Olympics. Under the glamour and the ceremonies though, China remains the country with the highest execution rates in the world. Under these circumstances, with the world focusing on China because of the games, several attempts have been made in order the China regime to be forced to lower these blood-stained rates as well as to improve its practices regarding human rights(see also yahoo case); fortunately with measurable results.

Για μια φορά ακόμα, οι κυβερνώντες αποδεικνύονται μάστορες στο επικοινωνιακό παιχνίδι. Το κέντρο βάρους της υπόθεσης Ζαχόπουλου έχει μετατοπιστεί, και όλοι πλέον ασχολούνται εδώ και πολλές ημέρες με ένα περιφερειακό της υπόθεσης ερώτημα. Είναι το πρώτο βήμα πριν να ατονήσει και ξεχαστεί και αυτή, αφήνοντας πίσω της (πάλι) αναπάντητα ερωτήματα. Δηλώσεις όπως 'το θέμα χειρίζεται η δικαιοσύνη', 'η κυβέρνηση δεν απέκρυψε ποτέ τίποτα' κλπ θα ακουστούν και πάλι και το τελικό αποτέλεσμα θα είναι μία τρύπα στο νερό. Με τον ίδιο (επιτυχημένο) τρόπο η κυβέρνηση χειρίστηκε τα θέματα "Απαγωγές Πακιστανών", "Vodafone-υποκλοπές-αυτοκτονία", "Δομημένα ομόλογα". Τα θυμάται κανείς; Αφού η δικαιοσύνη κάνει καλά το έργο της, πως και δεν έχουμε μάθει ποιοι είναι υπόλογοι για όλα τα παραπάνω; Το γενικότερο αποτέλεσμα είναι ότι γνωρίζοντας κάποιος ότι (τελικά) η δικαιοσύνη δεν θα τον αγγίξει, γίνεται αμετροεπής, αλαζόνας και η διαφθορά μπαίνει στο πετσί του. Μπράβο κύριοι... Τα καταφέρατε. Πρότυπο σαπίλας γίνατε.

Alvino Rey & His Orchestra - King Of The Guitar - 26 original mono recordings 1940-1949 (@256)

So, the album I liked most in 2007 was Arcade Fire's Neon Bible. A powerful, melodic, equally anthemic and approximable, witty, straightforward and at the same time with well-hidden treasures, it is an album that sets very high standards for the band.
Although one could claim that Arcade Fire work as a collective rather than a sum of individual musicians, it is Win Butler that, apart from co-founder, is the unquestionable frontman. Alvino Rey, a charismatic swing-era guitarist who is often credited as the father of the pedal steel guitar, was his grandfather.

P.S. Holy Fuck's album was also a revelation to me, but unfortunately I cannot find a relevant album to upload. Any ideas?

Helmet - Meantime (1992) (@256)

During 2007, I uploaded a series of albums that were relevant to albums I liked. These were the latest releases from Klaxons, White Stripes, Rufus Wainwright, the Enemy and the Good the Bad and the Queen. Nevertheless, I could not help myself from referring to two more. The first one is Battles' Mirrored. Apart from their stunning album, there are many triumphant reviews about their live performances, and many claim that it is John Stanier 's drumming ability that sets the framework of their live sound. John Stanier was a member of Helmet, whose album Meantime is uploaded here.

Various - A Sub Pop compilation (@256)

It was some 20 years (and some months) ago that Sup Pop released its first non-compilation record. It was in 1987 with Green River's 'Dry As A Bone' that the Seattle based record label was starting the fire that was about to become massive during the first half of the 90's. Although Sub Pop's importance lies heavily on the groups that emerged from the Seattle scene during the late 80's-early 90's, the new millennium finds the label with a bunch of very interesting groups. The first two of the following uploads are dedicated to the early days of Sub Pop, while the third is a showcase of Sub Pop's recent days. Although the first two parts will naturally gain attraction because of their high historical status, the third part, with first class music, is also highly recommended.

P.S. While many Sub Pop bands left to sign contracts with multinationals, to my opinion, there are two extremely overlooked figures who deserved much better from what they took. The first one is Jack Endino, the producer of the vast majority of Sub Pop's early releases. One could claim that he is widely responsible for the mixture of punk with heavy metal which became the trademark of grunge. Most of the songs of parts A and B of this post's uploads are Endino's productions. The second is Tad Doyle leader of Tad, for whom I consider that from the groups with similar sound of the same era, only Nirvana and Pearl Jam deserved to enjoy greater status.

«Aν και επιστημονικά ορθή (η γνώμη του), κρίθηκε επικοινωνιακά απαράδεκτη»...

Αυτό έλεγε η επίσημη κυβερνητική ανακοίνωση!!! Στάλθηκε στο «ψυγείο» ο Δασάρχης της Πάρνηθας, όχι γιατί έκανε το άλφα ή βήτα σοβαρό σφάλμα στην άσκηση των καθηκόντων του (που ΔΕΝ είναι η κατάσβεση των πυρκαγιών, αυτή είχε υπαχθεί στο τότε Υπ. Δημ. ...Αταξίας, από το Υπ. Γεωργίας, που υπάγονται οι Δασικοί) αλλά γιατί είπε ότι κάποια τμήματα του δρυμού της Πάρνηθας ΔΕΝ θα αναζωογονηθούν, επειδή η καταστροφή ήταν πολύ μεγάλη, έφτασε στις ρίζες...Και αυτό ήταν κακό για την κυβέρνηση. Και τού 'κοψαν το κεφάλι. Σύνηθες θα πείτε... Όμως ο παλιός Καραμανλής είχε πει κάποτε ότι στην πολιτική υπάρχουν πράγματα που γίνονται και ΔΕΝ ΛΕΓΟΝΤΑΙ και άλλα που λέγονται και δεν γίνονται...Ο νεότερος Καραμανλής όμως, πιθανότατα λόγω της απουσίας «αξιωματικής» αντιπολίτευσης, έχει αποθρασυνθεί εντελώς και ωμά, ωμότατα, «είπε» ΔΗΜΟΣΙΑ στον Δασάρχη (και σε κάθε άλλον δημόσιο υπάλληλο): Ξέρεις και κάνεις πολλά αλλά ΔΕΝ μάς βοηθάς να κοροϊδεύουμε τον κόσμο. Άρα δεν μάς κάνεις για διευθυντής, κάτσε στη γωνία. Αυτό δεν σημαίνει «απαράδεκτη επικοινωνιακά», δηλαδή προπαγανδιστικά, που λέγαμε παλιότερα (και ορθότερα και εντιμότερα...);;; Διαφωνεί κανείς;;;
Όχι για να υπερασπιστούμε τον συγκεκριμένο Δασάρχη απλώς, του οποίου ο υπογράφων καν δεν συγκράτησε το όνομά του ακούγοντας στο ραδιόφωνο την ΕΠΙΣΗΜΗ ανακοίνωση, αλλά το δικαίωμα κάθε δημόσιου υπάλληλου, κάθε πολίτη να μην είναι φερέφωνο της κυβερνητικής προπαγάντας. Να δηλώσουμε την αντίθεσή μας σ' αυτή την ΩΜΗ φαυλότητα των κυβερνώντων, που τόσο "καλά" (και τόσο γρήγορα!!!) «αντέγραψαν» κάποιες, τις χειρότερες, πρακτικές, προηγούμενων... Διότι ΔΕΝ υπάρχει μεγαλύτερη, τερατωδέστερη, φαυλότητα από την παραπάνω κυβερνητική ενέργεια και, ακόμα περισσότερο, την ΕΠΙΣΗΜΗ ανακοίνωσή της. Τι τσιτουρίδηδες και μαγγίνες, τι βουλγαράκηδες, τι κουμπάροι και «δικά μας» πολυδωρικά παιδιά... Εδώ είναι το ζουμί: Τα υποκείμενα που μάς κυβερνούν όχι μόνον κάνουν ΑΠΟΛΥΤΩΣ ΑΝΕΝΤΙΜΕΣ πολιτικές (αλλά και κοινού ποινικού δικαίου κάποιοι...) ενέργειες, αλλά μάς λένε κι όλας ότι μας θεωρούνε ΤΟΣΟ ΖΩΑ, ώστε να τις δηλώνουν ΕΠΙΣΗΜΑ. "Παιδιά σηκωθείτε να βγούμε στους δρόμους...». Πραγματικούς ή ...internet-ικούς, ή και τα δύο, καλλίτερα! Αλλοιώς καθισμένοι σπιτάκι μας, ας αναφωνήσουμε, στεντόρεια τη φωνή, ΤΟΙΟΥΤΟΣ ΕΠΡΕΠΕΝ ΗΜΙΝ ΑΡΧΙΕΡΕΥΣ !!!
